Transitioning from Military to Corporate: Charli Martin’s Journey

When I reflect on my career, the transition from military life to the corporate world feels like a natural evolution. The two might seem worlds apart, but for me, they’ve always been connected by a shared drive for excellence, structured execution, and a commitment to making an impact. It’s been nearly a year since I joined SecureCloud+ as Chief Operating Officer, and I can confidently say that my 20 years in the Royal Navy, coupled with the available opportunities at SecureCloud+, shaped me into the leader I am today.

Beginning My Journey in the Military

I joined the Royal Navy at 20, starting as an apprentice engineer. At the time, I had no idea how vast and varied the opportunities would be. What began as a technical role quickly evolved, taking me through incredible experiences and challenges. I was commissioned as an officer, and my responsibilities grew as I led teams of engineers on warships and experienced deployments in high-stakes environments.

One of my most formative roles was leading engineering teams in conflict zones. When you’re managing complex systems in the middle of a crisis, there’s no margin for error. Every minute matters, and every team member matters and plays a critical role in the mission’s success. Those moments taught me the importance of precision, accountability, and trust within a team—lessons that have stayed with me throughout my career.

Deployments were a constant part of my life for two decades. Whether I was in a conflict zone, at sea, or managing systems from afar, I learnt the value of adaptability and resilience. I had two children during my time in the Navy, which added another layer of complexity to balancing family life with an often unpredictable career. But even in these moments, I found support in the structure and camaraderie that the military fosters.

Finding My Way into the Corporate World

When I decided to leave the armed forces, it wasn’t because I wanted less challenge but because I wanted a new one. I moved into roles in nuclear engineering before eventually joining SecureCloud+. At every step of the way, I discovered that the skills I developed in the military transferred seamlessly into corporate leadership.

The regimented processes of the Navy align closely with how businesses should function at their best. Delivering results while optimising efficiency comes naturally to me because these were non-negotiables in the military. Being continuously in demanding situations made me comfortable with managing teams, projects, and systems under strict deadlines and high expectations, which mirrors the tempo of corporate life.

But perhaps what made my transition into SecureCloud+ so smooth was the company’s deep connection to the defence sector. SecureCloud+ works closely with the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and has a long history of hiring ex-military personnel. This cultural alignment meant I stepped into an environment where my experience was not only valued but fully understood. Many of my colleagues shared a military background, and that established an immediate sense of camaraderie and shared purpose.

This alignment with military values and expertise made the transition feel seamless. It allowed me to thrive in my role as COO, where I focus on ensuring that our operations run like clockwork. It’s a role that suits me perfectly because it combines technical expertise with strategic oversight. Whether it’s helping to refine our five-year plan or guiding the rollout of major initiatives like our secure collaboration product, I draw on my military experience every day to keep our processes sharp and our goals aligned.

Inclusivity and the Future of STEM

Beyond operations, I’m deeply passionate about improving inclusivity in STEM and Defence industries. During my military career, I was often one of the few women in the room, and it’s a perspective that drives my passion for encouraging women from all backgrounds to explore careers in technical and Defence fields. It’s not just about representation but about creating environments where diverse voices are valued and empowered.

This is a focus shared at SecureCloud+, where inclusivity is a key part of our culture. By fostering diverse perspectives across our teams, we not only enhance our operational effectiveness but also lay the groundwork for innovation and resilience in everything we do.

Final Thoughts

The path from military to corporate leadership has been incredibly rewarding. While the environments are different, the core principles remain the same. Whether you’re leading a naval operation or executing a corporate strategy, success relies on teamwork, clear communication, and a commitment to delivering excellence.

For me, Armed Forces Day is an opportunity to reflect on where I started and share how the lessons learnt in the military laid the foundation for my corporate role. It’s also a moment to celebrate the countless servicemen and women who bring their talents into industries like STEM and beyond. Transitioning careers is never without challenges, but with the right mindset and support, it can be a seamless and fulfilling experience.
